Partial Hospitalization Programs as a Resource to Reduce the Overload in Psychiatric Emergency Services

This article discusses the partial hospitalization program (PHP) as a third option that PES staff can consider when evaluating discharge alternatives. In particular, the what, who, and how of PHP referrals will be discussed as well as who should not be referred. The structure and function of PHP programs will be explained as well as a brief history of the PHP.
